The Momentum platform is built on an incredibly sophisticated technology framework that integrates numerous distinct functions and capabilities into a powerful, unified message management solution. We’ve represented this process with a platform diagram that provides a conceptual view of how Momentum works. While shown as hardware components for illustrative purposes, the following elements are the underlying functions and capabilities of the platform.
This ever-vigilant, innately intelligent guardian protects your network and customers by ensuring the right messages get through and the wrong ones don’t. The filtering rules you set in the Policy Manager determine how the Inbound Gateway performs this function. They invoke applications from your choice of anti-spam and anti-virus partners, apply data from internal and external sources, instruct the Protocol Manager to verify that mail conforms to accepted SMTP messaging practices, and tell the Flow Controller how to throttle and shape traffic. All of the rules are adaptive to outcomes and conditions, so you can respond system-wide and in real time to threats that might affect your network or customers. And, of course, they’re applied at the edge of your network – the Inbound Gateway – to minimize your operating cost and exposure to risk.
By verifying that inbound email conforms to accepted SMTP messaging practices, the Inbound Protocol Manager helps protect your environment against denial of service attacks and reduces the infrastructure costs of processing and storing spam. Protocol management capabilities include a complete range of verifications: validity of incoming IP addresses, whitelist/blacklist processing, DNS reverse lookup, number of concurrent platform connections, and URL blacklist checks for embedded URLs. BANNER, HELO, AUTH, MAILFROM, RCPT TO, and DATA checks are all included.
As your system’s “traffic cop,” the Inbound Flow Controller throttles inbound mail and applies RBLs, tarpitting, traffic shaping, and other techniques.
As the platform’s central brain, the Policy Manager syncs with other apps and data sources, and applies business rules to inbound and outbound messages, dynamically adjusting to new intelligence on the fly. With the most flexible policy management engine in the industry, Momentum gives you the greatest degree of control over the flow of mail through your system. The Policy Manager also gives your customers the power to decide how they want to send or receive email by letting you define policies based on the preferences they select. It allows you to create personalized workflow rules based on customer information stored in the directory or other data repositories, including legacy and third-party applications.
Rules for inbound message management can be informed by third party apps, whitelist/blacklist data, authentication credentials, individual customer preferences, and other policies unique to your business. Rules for outbound message management can be driven by your reputation or that of your customers or business units, the class of mail, or even the specific message being sent.
By transferring information to and from data sources and disseminating it through the platform instantly, the Intelligence Router keeps everyone informed in real-time – so you can react quickly to unanticipated outcomes and changing circumstances. If in a clustered environment, the Intelligence Router disseminates information across your entire system, multiplying the benefit of enhanced responsiveness.
To regulate the outbound flow of email, the Outbound Flow Controller applies intelligent rate limiting based on rules about the sender’s reputation and policies of the destination domain. If a message can’t be sent or delivered, the Outbound Flow Controller stores it in an outbound queue and automatically resends it when the issue is resolved. The rules you set in the Policy Manager govern which messages will be stored in the queue and how they’ll be processed and delivered. Queue management reduces operating and customer service costs by keeping service interruptions and slowdowns invisible to your customers. And by alerting administrators to backlogs and potential greylisting, it also helps you identify and resolve mail flow issues as soon as they occur. In addition, advanced queue management algorithms allow for large queues to be managed without performance degradation.
The Outbound Protocol Manager can be configured to check outbound mail against spam URLs and flow control limits. It also supports the latest authentication and accreditation techniques for improving deliverability.
By controlling what, when and how messages are sent from your network, the Outbound Gateway protects your sending reputation and deliverability. Based on the rules you set in the Policy Manager, your outbound mail is segregated by customer or business unit, reputation, mail class, domain, IP address or other factors, and different delivery parameters are applied for deployment. The rules can be dynamically adjusted based on delivery results.
Added functionality from internal/external applications and Message Systems modules integrate seamlessly to work with business rules, ensuring messages and data are handled exactly the way you want. The Message Systems EcoNet partner network features best-of-breed application providers, but you’re free to use your own. We also offer a series of standard modules for various purposes, but you can utilize your own applications or customize the ones we provide.
Transporting messages at lightning speed, according to precise instructions from the Policy Manager, our advanced MTA improves operational efficiency and reduces infrastructure needs. Powered by the Ecelerity engine, it’s the fastest, most powerful, and most flexible MTA on the market. With increased speed and control over your messaging flow, you can eliminate costly implementations designed for worst-case scenarios by avoiding those situations in the first place.
The Admin Console gives your administrator a real-time view into all messaging processes, interactions and results. Information is instantly logged into the Data Repository and then accessed via a web UI that features interactive graphing and drill-down reporting to easily pinpoint issues. The logging functions also integrate easily with existing monitoring systems to help you further track and diagnose mail flow issues, improve customer support and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
The Message Management tool is what your marketing or other internal staff use to create, deploy and manage their outbound email programs. You can easily integrate your own campaign management tool to perform these functions, use our new application – Message Central – or create a hybrid solution.
Other messaging solutions provide limited (active-passive) or no clustering capability, which means you have no way to manage a large group of mail servers from a central point. Momentum is the only technology that provides active-active clustering and allows you to control many nodes from a central machine, even across different geographic locations.
Our global clustering functionality eliminates the impact of hardware issues on message processing and delivery, and provides truly automatic failover capabilities. With a consolidated view across the entire environment, the cluster configuration also makes it easy for your administrators to monitor server activities and quickly resolve operational issues. This centralized management structure reduces complexity and saves valuable time for your IT staff. Plus, it greatly enhances responsiveness by enabling real-time information sharing across the system.
