UI Designer

Message Systems is seeking a highly skilled User Interface/User Experience Designer who understands fundamental usability and aesthetic principals to guide software user interface development for its family of messaging products. You will be expected to take rough ideas and high-level concepts and create detailed, implementable mock-ups for development. The designer will work closely with software engineers and product managers to derive business processes, analyze user needs, assist in requirements definition, design browser-based interfaces, and design and conduct usability testing.

Responsibilities:

• Researching, designing and prototyping user experiences for new features, creating design mockups, story boarding, producing visual assets as needed and writing behavioral documentation (required for proper design implementation).
• Produce creative, simple and highly usable solutions for software user interface design.
• Work closely with software engineers and product managers of the assigned project in determining software interface design directions.
• Assist with new user interface testing and participate in usability reviews to get feedback on new designs.
• Collaborate and communicate with teams in engineering and product management to produce superior solutions.
• Maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across Message Systems products.

Required Skills:

• Ability to consistently produce simple design solutions to complex problems.
• An outstanding body of work demonstrated as a design portfolio or demo reel (video, film or web examples) demonstrating the successful delivery of innovative design solutions and/or compelling video or flash movie.
• Exceptional skills in creating different types of prototypes or mock-ups using tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
• Exceptional documentation skills of new concepts for user interface design and behavior.
• Excellent presentation, communication and organization skills.
• Ability to create a vision for new user interface and to communicate such vision to teams from different disciplines.
• Exceptional understanding of fundamental design disciplines (composition, information architecture, color theory, typography and animation) and principals of good user interface design (consistency, simplicity, usability, etc.).
• Ability to work in a fast pace environment.
• Natural collaborator and communicator who prefers developing designs in a team environment.

Qualifications:

• 5 or more years producing great designs.
• Bachelor degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Software Engineering and/or Visual Design.
• Strong academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule).

This position is full-time in our Columbia, MD office. We're only considering candidates with existing US work eligibility.
